What is the Tasting Panel?

The Tasting Panel is a place to get instant feedback from industry leaders including buyers, press, chefs and product developers. You will have 5 minutes of product engagement followed by 5 minutes of feedback.

Who will be judging my products?

We're really excited that a wide array of top industry experts are taking time out of their busy schedules to make this amazing opportunity possible. The panel will consist of a rotating collection of 3 of these experts at any one time. 

Why is this a good idea for my business?

Food businesses spend an average of £64,000 figuring out how to make their business profitable, mostly by trial and error and learning from mistakes they make along the way. We think that the Tasting Panel is a way for you to learn what works and what will sell from people in the know before you invest your budget into new branding, product development and packaging, so you can make informed decisions about how to grow.

How do I book a slot?

You can book a Tasting Panel session when you purchase your ticket for Bread & Butter. The Tasting Panel is an additional £25. The funds from the Tasting Panel bookings go towards making sure that everything runs smoothly in the run up and on the day itself, such as having additional team members and administrative costs. We will be in touch with ticket holders closer to the festival about timings of your Tasting Panel slot. 

Is this a Meet The Buyer opportunity?

We know that there are lots of Meet the Buyer opportunities for small food businesses, so we wanted to do something different. You will get a chance to present your product to the panellists, but this isn't a pitching situation per se. Please make the most of your chance to learn from the advice and insights of our panellists, who work with hundreds of products every day. We are unable to guarantee you a slot with any specific expert or buyer.

What kind of feedback can you ask for?

When you present your product to the panellists, you will have five minutes to chat to them about what they think about your product. You can ask them about: your price point, branding, product positioning, packaging, taste, perceived target market, sales potential and/or anything else you can think of. Please remember that you only have five minutes, so try to think about what you are going to say before you get there and focus on what matters most to you and your business.

Here are some great examples of Tasting Panel questions:

  • Do you think my branding clearly communicates my product's USP?
  • How can I improve the packaging of my product in a economical way?
  • Is the price of my product well positioned compared to everything else on the market?
  • Do you think my product is considerably different to everything else on the market at the moment?
  • Where do you think my product will fly off the shelf?

Is there somewhere for me to prepare my product?

There will be a prep table available for you to put your product together. Please bring everything you need to present your product to the panellists. Unfortunately there are no cooking or refrigeration facilities available, so please make the appropriate arrangements beforehand so that your product shines on the day.
